Social Skills Groups for Kids in San Luis Obispo

If you are looking for social skills support for your child in San Luis Obispo or the surrounding area, you are not alone. It is one of the most common things parents come to us looking for, and it is an area where the right kind of support can make a real difference.

Why Do Some Kids Need Extra Help with Social Skills?

Social skills are not always something kids just pick up naturally. For some — especially those with sensory processing differences, ADHD, or anxiety — the social world can feel overwhelming and hard to read. Kids who have autism often want to connect with others but have trouble with the mechanics: knowing when to talk and when to listen, reading facial expressions, managing frustration when things do not go their way, or understanding unspoken rules.

If you have noticed your child pulling away from peers, struggling with turn-taking, or melting down in group settings, our page on signs of developmental challenges is a helpful starting point.

What Does Social Skills Therapy Actually Look Like?

At Brainwaves OT, social skills therapy is built into a sensory-based approach. We know that a child who is dysregulated cannot access social learning. So before we can help a kid practice sharing or turn-taking, we have to make sure their nervous system is in a place where they can actually pay attention and connect.

Groups are a big part of this. Being in a small group with peers who are working on similar things gives kids a real-life environment to practice, mess up, and try again — with support close by.

What to Look for in a Program

Not all social skills programs are the same. When looking for a group in SLO County, ask whether it is run by a licensed professional, whether it accounts for sensory and regulation differences, and whether there is a family component so you can support the skills at home too.

The best social skills programs do not just drill behavior. They help kids understand themselves, build confidence, and actually enjoy being around other people.

Building Connection at Home Too

One thing we hear from families is that the gains made in therapy can be hard to carry over at home. That is why we love activities that build connection and co-regulation between kids and the adults in their lives.

Obstacle courses are one of the best tools for this. They involve natural turn-taking, communication, problem-solving, and shared joy — all of the building blocks of social connection — wrapped up in something that feels like play.

Take it home with you

The Obstacle Course Book was written to help families build connection and regulation at home — the same foundation we build in our sessions.
