Accommodations and Considerations for Visual Processing Difficulties

  • Using graph paper for math work and colored template paper for writing that has extra space for kids that struggle with staying within the bound or margins of written work. A useful template paper is one that has a different color for the top and bottom lines (for writing) or different colored boxes (for math).
  • Reduce clutter in the environment. Print worksheets with larger font with less visual clutter and extraneous details, which can be distracting and confusing.
  • Whenever possible, allow the child to use physical manipulatives, particularly when learning something new, so they can better perceive and understand visual information which may be more challenging when providing them with only 2D images on worksheets.
  • Encourage your child to cover up written text or images on worksheets or in books until it’s time to actively read or view them. This can help with focus and reduce overwhelm. You can also have them highlight the words as they read.
  • When appropriate, books or assignments on tape could be more beneficial for your child. They may also prefer verbal prompting and cuing for completing assignments and/or exams.
  • Ensure proper lighting in the space.
  • Multi-sensory learning tools and strategies can be particularly helpful, as these activities allow for the use of other sensory systems as opposed to over-relying on the visual system, particularly if there are difficulties processing visual information.
  • Use color-coded systems that are consistent to support visual attention and visual memory. For organizational labels or routine visuals, use pictures as much as possible, limiting the amount of words.
  • Use a piece of paper or notecard to cover up portions of the worksheets until the child is ready to engage in that section or problem. This reduces visual information which can lead to overwhelm and distraction.
